Job summary

The post-holder will provide care for patients on our registered list at our welcoming site in Horfield, Bristol.

You will work within the treatment room team in your own consulting room providing a range of timed appointments providing care to both adults and children and performing various general Practice required services

We are seeking a Practice Nurse for a part time or full time position to provide core practice nursing services, Monday to Friday plus some evenings and occasional Saturdays on a rotational basis.

Experience of working in a Primary Care environment is preferred but is not essential as training and development will be provided for the right candidate

Main duties of the job

  • Working as a member of the practice nursing team to provide nursing treatments to all patients registered with this practice.
  • Working with other members of the primary healthcare team to meet agreed targets in line with quality, Health Standards and National Guidelines.
  • To oversee other junior staff where necessary.
  • To maintain accurate and comprehensive nursing records including computerised information, in accordance with practice needs, policies and procedures.
  • To work within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and adhere to its principals.
  • Follow agreed clinical protocols liaising with Senior Nurses or GPs as appropriate
  • Following training & assessment wound management including compression bandaging
  • Removal of Sutures if required
  • ECGs
  • Venepuncture
  • Following training & assessment cervical screening
  • Basic sexual health screening including swabs
  • Following training & assessment to provide travel immunisations to patients as needed using PGDs
  • Following training & assessment routine immunisations
  • Following training & assessment other injections, e.g. Depo-Provera contraceptive injection/ depot injections used for mental health/ Vit B12
  • Requesting pathology tests, e.g. swabs, urine, stool and sputum samples
  • General health promotion work, e.g. weight management and smoking cessation with sign posting to most appropriate health care practitioner within the practice

requesting pathology tests e.g. urine culture, swabs, blood tests.

Advise patients on general health care and health promotion, with referral to other members of the health care team as necessary

Cervical Cytology if qualified to do so, or development of this

Long term conditions management if qualified to do so, or interest in developing this

Provide contraception advice including reviews and emergency contraception within limits of competency with support from GPs and Nurse Manager as needed.

GENERAL CLINICAL underpinning principles:

Work from the surgery and within communities (if needed) as an autonomous practitioner caring for patients and families

General health promotion work, e.g. weight management and lifestyles

Where the post holder is a prescriber: Prescribe/issue medications as appropriate following policy, patient group directives NICE (national) and local clinical guidelines and local care pathways.

Formally and informally impart knowledge and skills to colleagues promoting peer review and best practice within the work environment

Communicate at all levels within the team ensuring an effective service is delivered

Pathological specimens and investigatory procedures

Undertake the collection of pathological specimens including intravenous blood samples, swabs etc.

ADMINISTRATION AND PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensure the clinical computer system is kept up to date, with accurate details recorded and amended

Attend and participate in practice meetings as required

Restocking and maintenance of own clinical areas and consulting rooms

Ensure evidenced-based care is delivered at the highest standards ensuring delivery of high-quality patient care

Work within local policies and procedures

Participate in the audit process, evaluation and implementing plans and practice change

Contribute positively to the effectiveness and efficiency of the team and work colleagues

TRAINING AND PERSONAL/PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Training requirements will be monitored by both yearly appraisal and interim reviews and will be in accordance with practice requirements.

In addition to maintaining continued education through attendance at any courses and/or study days necessary to ensure that professional development requirements are met, the post-holder will participate in any training programme implemented by the practice as part of this employment

Personal development will be encouraged and supported by the practice.
