Job summary

We are looking for a full-time equivalent post which could also be filled by two part time staff. We have a large, friendly, and supportive nursing team. We are excited to have the opportunity to expand our team and the vacancy arises due to our growing list and extending the skills of our existing team.

Working under supervision of our Practice Nurses and in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the post-holder will be responsible for performing a range of procedures and health-checks for patients, dependent upon competency and training.

These may include: phlebotomy, injections, blood pressure monitoring, simple dressings and ECGs. The role will also include administrative elements such as fridge checking, ordering supplies etc. The role is varied, interesting and allows relationships to be built with regular patients.

This role requires an enthusiastic and self-motivated person, with excellent communication and IT skills along with a willingness to learn new skills and a caring attitude.

Experience as an HCA is desirable, but we are also willing to train an inexperienced candidate who shows enthusiasm and potential.

Main duties of the job

Working as a member of the nursing team to provide nursing treatments to all patients registered with this practice within the professional competence of the postholder.

Planned appointments with patients including wound care, venepuncture, healthchecks, annual reviews and blood pressure monitoring

Working with other members of the primary healthcare team to meet agreed targets in line with QOF, Health Standards and National Guidelines

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs
  • Wound care non complex dressings following initial assessment by a qualified nurse
  • Removal of Sutures
  • ECGs both routine and emergency
  • Venepuncture
  • BP measurements in accordance with practice protocol
  • Following appropriate training undertake NHS Health Checks or equivalent lifestyle checks as per protocol. Signposting patients following these checks as appropriate.
  • Following appropriate training to undertake 6 monthly diabetic follow up appointments as per protocol.
  • General health promotion work, e.g. weight management and smoking cessation with sign posting to most appropriate health care practitioner within the practice
  • Manage the loaning of 24 hr ambulatory BP machines and other BP machines for patients to use at home.
  • Manage the loan of the 24 hour ECG tape with patients
  • Following appropriate training and annual updates to administer B12 injections under PSDs signed by GPs
  • Following appropriate training and annual updates to administer annual influenza vaccinations/pneumonia and shingles vaccination to adults (18 years and over) in at risk categories under PSDs signed by GP and intranasal flu injections to children, as per current national immunisation guidelines.
  • Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate, who are being examined by another clinician
  • Assisting GPs with minor surgery and coil fittings
  • Participate in other developmental roles as they are introduced with appropriate training and support
  • To provide and maintain high standards of evidence-based patient care and work with practice policies and procedures
  • To establish effective working relationships with colleagues and other agencies concerned with patient care to ensure a high standard of individual patient care is co-ordinated and maintained
  • To maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records including computerised information, in accordance with practice needs, policies and procedures

Other tasks will include:

Maintaining clinical stocks and other equipment appropriate for clinical use.

  • Ensuring the daily checks on equipment are carried out and delegate if not present.
  • Maintain cleanliness of drug fridges ensuring correct stock rotation
  • Maintaining and cleaning equipment used by the nurses and GPs
  • Maintaining GP and Nurses rooms, stocking and rotating items as required
  • Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of nurses and treatment rooms
  • Ordering of Health Promotion Literature if needed
  • Ordering of stock from the Hospital or through specific suppliers
  • Participation in administrative systems in the practice
  • A duty to advise nurse leads or other trained nursing colleagues of potential problems or errors within the range of assigned tasks
  • Attend and participate in any practice meetings when required
  • Any other delegated duties appropriate to the post

Shift requirements:

  • Weekend working around 1 in 12 Saturdays on rotation
  • Some twilight working on rotation (latest finish 8pm)
  • Some flexibility in shift times and working pattern main shifts regular / fixed rather than a rolling pattern which can be mutually agreed with the candidate and our team
