Job summary

We are looking for a replacement asthma nurse as our current nurse is due to retire in 2025 (after 35 years with us!). We have two practices - 19 Beaumont Street and Elms Road and would ideally like any new hire to work across both sites.

To post-holder would be responsible for the delivery of evidence-based nursing services, working as part of the practice multi-disciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population.

Working autonomously, the Nurse Prescriber will be responsible for a number of clinical areas such as health promotion, chronic disease management, health prevention, well women and well man clinics, as well as supporting the management team in the reviewing of clinical policy and procedure.

This organisation must ensure that the post holder has access to appropriate clinical supervision and an appropriate named individual in the organisation to provide general advice and support on a day-to-day basis.

Main duties of the job

The practice nurse prescriber will join a team of nurse and health care assistants who provide nursing care to the patients registered with the practice. This will include the management of minor illness, chronic disease management and working at times in the treatment room delivering nursing care. You will work closely with the practice team.

Main duties include:

  • Nurse-led management of minor injury
  • Nurse-led management of Asthma
  • Management of chronic disease
  • Work in the treatment room to provide nursing care to patients, including:
  1. Wound care management
  2. Injections
  3. Phlebotomy
  4. Immunisations (for all ages)
  5. Cervical cancer screening
  6. Travel jabs and advice
  7. Assessment and management of UTSs
  8. ECGs
  9. Health Promotion Activities
  10. Sexual Health and contraception advice

  • Signpost and referral to other professionals, agencies and sources of care according to the patients needs
  • Actively participate in safeguarding for children and adults, including following practice policies and procedures
  • Apply infection control measures in accordance with practice policies and best practice
  • Undertake first aid and management of emergencies, within expected professional competency
  • Undertake annual training and demonstrates competency in anaphylaxis and resuscitation techniques

About us

Our practice serves 24,000 patients across two sites - one in the city centre and one in Botley. We have a wide variety of patients and no day is the same!

Our patients are looked after by a team of 16 GPs, 8 nurses, 4 HCAs, a paramedic, a PA, and many admin staff! We're looking for someone personable and friendly who will fit in well with the "Beaumont Elms" vibe.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The role of Asthma Nurse will be to manage asthma within the practice, including:

a. Management of spirometry

b. Yearly asthma reviews

c. New patient asthma reviews

d. New diagnosis in children and adults

The following are the core responsibilities of the Nurse Prescriber. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

a. Develop, implement and embed health promotion and wellbeing programmes

b. Develop, implement and evaluate individual treatment plans for acute and non-acute conditions

c. Support the clinical team in the development of individual treatment plans for chronic disease patients

d. Identify, manage and support patients as risk of developing long-term conditions, preventing adverse effects on the patients health

e. Provide routine nursing care to patients as required in accordance with clinical based evidence, NICE and the NSF

f. Prescribe medication in accordance with PGD and within own scope of practice

g. Review medication for effectiveness, need and national guidance

h. Request and advice on prescribed or over-the-counter medication on side effects, common interactions and dosage

i. Support patients to ensure compliance with prescribed medications

j. Provide wound care (ulcer/Doppler, etc.) to patients

k. Provide travel medicine services

l. Request pathology services as necessary, processing and interpreting results as required

m. Refer patients directly to other services as appropriate

n. Provide chronic disease clinics, delivering patient care as necessary, referring patients to secondary/specialist care as required

o. Maintain accurate clinical records in conjunction with extant legislation

p. Ensure SNOMED CT codes are used effectively

q. Maintain chronic disease registers
