Job responsibilities
1. Role description
The role of the GP Assistant, working closely with the Assigned GP, is:
1.1 To support the GP(s) smooth running of clinics and management of patient lists by performing the more routine administration tasks on behalf of the GP freeing up their time to focus on the patient.

2. Main Duties, Outline Responsibilities and Work Portfolio
The post holder will be required to follow existing processes/put arrangements in place to deliver the following responsibilities:
3.1 Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patients as requested by the GP or other clinicians
3.2 Proactively manage the pathology results of assigned GP
3.3 Proactively manage patients requiring drug monitoring/medication review, ensuring that they have been invited and attended for all relevant checks
3.4 Proactively managing some areas of QOF/IIF (to be determined each year on publication of the current scheme), inviting in patients for their reviews
3.5 Assisting the GP with communicating with patients, advising of medication changes, providing support for lifestyle advice and signposting to others such as clinical pharmacist etc.
3.6 Explaining treatment procedures to patients
3.7 Monitoring and assisting the GPs in managing, prioritising, and actioning tasks
3.8 Monitoring clinical searches for patients of their own Assigned GP, such as but not limited to, drug monitoring searches and highlighting exceptions to the GP
3.9 Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agency etc.
3.10 Working closely with other teams within the practice notably secretarial, workflow and scripts to improve communication/build relationships with patients and problem solve
3.11 Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies
3.12 Liaise with care homes where GP has responsibility for a home
There may be instances where the role is required to cover responsibilities of other teams in order to maintain service levels.
4 Patient/Client Care and Support
The postholder will be required to have direct patient contact (predominately by telephone) and will support patient care by accessing and maintaining patient records and files and managing access to medical records.
5 Leadership and Workforce
The postholder will have no direct people management responsibilities or requirement to deliver formal training.
6 Financial, budgetary and contract management
The postholder will have no specific financial, budgetary or contract management responsibilities. All staff at ENMP are required to demonstrate a duty of care with respect to resources issued to them (equipment and supplies) and to maintain a safe and compliant work area.
7 Organisational Policy
The postholder is expected to follow established policies and procedures.
8 Task management (including work related planning)
The postholder is expected to manage own varied workload and will support the planning of Assigned GP workload
9 Decision Making
The postholders autonomy in decision making will be bound by the processes in which they operate. The postholder will be able to seek advice and guidance from both the Operations Manager and the Assigned GP.
10 Communication and Information
Internally the postholder will be required to liaise with the Assigned GP and Operations Manager and wider internal staff in order to effectively discharge their responsibilities.
The highest standards of confidentiality will be required by the postholder. In addition, the postholder will support the equality, diversity and rights of patients, carers and colleagues, to include:
- Acting in a way that recognises the importance of peoples rights, interpreting them in a way that is consistent with Practice procedures and policies, and current legislation
- Respecting the privacy, dignity, needs and beliefs of patients, carers and colleagues

Responsibility for data entry, text processing or storage of data, utilising paper or computer-based data entry systems are a key component of the role.
11 Research and Audit
All staff at ENMP are expected to support and assist with research and audits from time to time but the postholder will have no responsibility other than complying with these requirements.
