Job summary

Brookside Group Practice is an innovative, forward thinking, large, 4 site practice working together as Earley + Primary Care Network, which manages approximately 31,000 patients. Our team of around 130 people includes many allied health professionals, including a thriving health and wellbeing team helping to address patients mental and emotional wellbeing needs alongside our doctors, physician associates and MIND services, MSK practitioners, pharmacists, paramedics, nurses, healthcare assistants, support, and administration staff.

Previous experience of nursing or working as a Health Care Associate / Assistant in General Practice preferred

Main duties of the job

Job Summary:

  • to work as a member of the General Practice Team
  • to perform the following tasks safely & efficiently working within agreed protocols.
  • The successful candidate will have previous practical experience of Venepuncture and Blood pressure checks.

  1. They will work as part of a team supporting clinicians and patients by carrying out clinical support, infection control, restocking and stock rotation tasks.

    Other tasks could include but not limited to:

    • Suture removal

    • ECGs

    • Spirometry

    • Dressings

Job Description for a Health Care Associate

Responsible to: Practice Nurse Manager and Clinical Development Nurse.

General Manager

Partnership

Job Summary:

  • to work as a member of the Primary Healthcare Team supporting clinicians and patients by carrying out clinical support tasks, infection control tasks, restocking and stock rotation.

  • to perform the following tasks safely & efficiently working within agreed protocols. Training will be given as required.

    Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Venepuncture

  2. Removal of sutures & clips

  3. ECGs

  4. Spirometry

  5. Urine testing

  6. Blood pressure measurement and monitoring

  7. Follow up dressings

  8. Arrange the lending of & teaching patients how to use home & 24hour blood pressure machines

  9. Assist with setting up for minor surgery procedures including dermatology, IUD insertion and removal and implanon insertion and removal and minor ops.

  10. Teaching of inhaler technique

  11. Assisting with annual diabetic reviews

  12. Giving advice on health promotion including new patient health checks for patients with long term conditions

  13. Act on yellow flag reminders where appropriate

  14. Assisting with the recall of patients for review

  15. Entering data e.g. childhood immunisations, influenza

  16. Computerisation of letters & notes

  17. Chaperone duties

  18. Stock checks and reordering stock on a weekly basis

  19. Record fridge temperatures and promptly report temperature variation from standard

  20. On the basis of a Patient Specific Direction and with signed authorisation:

  • Pertussis immunisation for pregnant women

  • Pneumococcal immunisation

  • Vitamin B injections

The HCA will refer to a supervising member of the clinical team if deviation from the protocol is required, if unsure in any way, or where clinical judgement is required before proceeding.

The HCA has responsibilities to

  • liaise with other members of the healthcare team as appropriate particularly regarding any concerns regarding patient care

  • maintain good standards of practice in all areas of work

  • maintain accurate, contemporaneous & adequate medical records

  • maintain standards of infection control as per practice policy/guidelines

  • acknowledge & keep within limitations of HCA role

  • restock & tidy room at the end of each clinic
