We are looking for an enthusiastic, capable and experienced Pharmacy Technician to join our Pharmacy Team here at the practice.
We have an existing team of 4 Pharmacy Technicians who fantastic provide support to our Clinical Team in the receipt and preparation of repeat prescriptions for our 19,500 patients - and we are looking to expand the team further.
Main duties of the job
Pharmacy Technicians play an important role, complementing Clinical Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians are different to Clinical Pharmacists as they are not able to prescribe or make clinical decisions, instead working under supervision to ensure safe, effective and efficient use of medicines.
The
Pharmacy Technician provides support to our clinical team in the receipt and
preparation of repeat prescriptions for our 19,500 patients. This role is the
main point of contact for patient enquiries about their prescriptions, so
resilience is important. The post holder will be liaising on sensitive medical
information, so a caring customer service communication style is essential.
Problem solving on a
day to day basis on issues relating to the role, the post holder will also
enjoy working closely as a Team to achieve shared objectives and ensure daily
priorities are delivered
About us
We are a large, friendly 19,500 patient practice on the South Coast, 15 mins from Brighton.
We have a team of 14 Nurses and HCA's, 16 GPs (Partners and Salaried), an administration team, reception team and Pharmacy team.
We are environmentally friendly and have a modern low carbon emission building with Ground Source Heat Pump and Solar Panels. We have a shower and are looking to install a bike shed.

Key Functions
Duties will include co-ordinating and preparing repeat prescriptions for our patients, data entry onto patient records, EPS and Patient and Pharmacy liaison. The tasks and responsibilities to be undertaken may include any or all of the items in the following lists, dependent on current and evolving practice workload and staffing levels:
- Work with our clinical team to provide a responsive repeat prescription service delegated to the Prescription Team as appropriate
- Reconciliation of Prescription changes from hospital letters & discharge summaries
- Reauthorisation of Repeat Medications including:
o Evening up of prescriptions
o Identifying clinical investigations necessary for repeat meds to be reauthorized adding pathology forms to the clinical database as necessary
o Booking the appropriate investigation appointments
o Ensuring patients have sufficient medication whilst re-authorisation process takes place according to guidelines
- Delivering the technical aspects of prescription preparation to ensure the safe prescribing of medicines
- Providing instructions to educate people on the correct way to take their medicine as appropriate
- Answering incoming calls and fielding patient questions at the desk
- Delivering an efficient prescription service for our compliance aid patients and ensuring service targets are met and errors are minimised
- Comply with legal and professional requirements, accepted guidance on professional practice, and with safe systems of work for re-authorising repeat prescriptions
- Run analysis reports and gather information from a variety of sources for continuous improvement, safe management of repeat prescriptions, and to co-ordinate medication reviews or changes as appropriate
- Liaise with pharmacies on the supply of prescribed drugs, alert our clinicians of any supply issues and forward information on the recommended alternatives
- Expedite urgent prescriptions to help ensure a safe and responsive service for our Patients
- Respond to enquiries from patients, carers, secretaries, NHS administrators, Consultants or the Medicines Management Team in a courteous, timely and efficient manner, by telephone, letter and email, as well as face-to-face - and maintain precise records of the communications
- Provide an efficient administration service as part of a team to ensure the smooth running of the prescription support to our clinicians
- Post, fax and email written correspondence as appropriate to deliver the requested correspondence in a timely manner, and ensure this is recorded in the Patient record
- Ensure you are keeping Patient information updated and that Patient information is secure / kept confidential at all times
- Maintain accurate Patient records promptly and quickly - entering data in accordance with reporting requirements
- Keep up to date with the local formulary and the National restricted drugs list
- Bring any queries to the attention of the relevant doctor, practice pharmacist, to include under and over usage
- Issue nursing supplies e.g. dressings, catheters if advised by a suitably trained nurse
- Inactivate drugs that have never been issued or have not been issued for a specified period of time, where necessary to check such action with the usual doctor / prescribing lead
- Liaise with external Pharmacy services and patients as necessary to resolve queries
- Build good working relationships with local Pharmacies to help enable our prescription service
- Check emails regularly and deal with them appropriately
- Create tasks and assist clinicians in managing document workflow relating to prescriptions
- Establish and maintain filing and administrative systems so that written or computerised information is easily accessible and secure
- Ensure you have adequate stationery supplies in stock
- Escalate any problems to your Line Manager or Practice Manager that you need support with
- Provide cover for members of the Prescription team during periods of sickness and annual leave
- Undertake training as requested to support safe and effective services for the Practice
