Job summary
The post holder is a pharmacy technician, with the chosen applicant being an integral part of the general practice team, working within their professional boundaries in each practice within the Primary Care Network (PCN).
This role will work under the supervision of the PCN Clinical pharmacist to ensure that patients receive safe, accurate and timely supply of their prescribed medication.
The candidate will need to provide technical and administrative support to the clinical pharmacists, practice GPs, nurses, HCAs and reception/administrative staff, and support the PCN and practices clinical teams with queries around medication from patients.
The pharmacy technician will complete audits around patient safety in the prescribing of medication and present the information for sharing with the clinical team.
Wakefield North PCN recognises that pharmacy technicians will play an important role, complementing our existing clinical pharmacist team and other healthcare professionals of PCN Norths multi-disciplinary team. Pharmacy technicians core role responsibilities will cover clinical, technical and administrative categories and will undoubtedly enable greater effective and efficient use of medicines.
Main duties of the job
The following are the core responsibilities of the PCN Norths pharmacy technician. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
- To act as a Technical Pharmacy Advisor to Practice Clinicians
- To act as a Technical Pharmacy Advisor to Practice Clinicians
- To advise Practice Management and other non-clinical staff concerning administrative aspects of medicines management as appropriate
- To manage repeat prescription requests, resolving queries where possible and producing prescriptions for clinical review and signature
- To address the following areas without the need to consult a GP/Clinical Pharmacist in each case (although clinical support and advice will always be available if required):
- Review dates following medication reviews, setting up electronic repeat dispensing where-ever possible to streamline the process for the patient and the practice.
- Facilitate and document correct addition & removal of medications following receipt of a discharge summaries, secondary care and community clinic letters.
- Tidying repeat medication lists including synchronising durations and removing medications not ordered within a defined period
- Changing acute medications to repeat where appropriate- e.g. A new medication that a GP/Pharmacist Prescriber has commenced and there is subsequently evidence for the need for the item on a repeat basis and necessary tests/checks have confirmed this.
About us
Wakefield North PCN is looking to recruit an additional Clinical Pharmacy Technician to join our existing, growing pharmacy team. The team have built excellent working relationships amongst themselves and the practices within our PCN, along with pharmacy staff from neighbouring PCNs. We are able to provide strong pharmacy leadership with regular training; listening and responding to the needs of the team and supporting them to develop within their roles.
We consist of six GP practices on the Eastern side of Wakefield District. Our practices are Henry Moore Clinic, Riverside Medical Centre, Tieve Tara Medical Centre, Station Lane Medical Centre, St Thomas Road Surgery and Newland Surgery.
You will be part of our growing multi-disciplinary additional roles team, who all work together to support our GP practices and their patients.
You will be employed by Conexus Healthcare Limited which is the Confederation for General Practice in Wakefield, who have four areas of work:
1. Delivery of high-quality public facing Health and Wellbeing services across the Wakefield District
2. Delivery of Training, Development and Consultancy support across the United Kingdom
3. Supporting Our Practices and Primary Care Networks (PCNs)
4. Providing a voice and influence for General Practice in the Health and Care System
