Job summary

General Practice Assistants (GPAs) form part of a multi-disciplinary team within primary care and support the GPs smooth running of clinics. You will carry out administrative tasks, alongside basic clinical duties which will help free up GP time and improve the patients access/experience in practice as well as supporting our Care Co-ordinator team covering the Care Homes in our district.

Main duties of the job

The following are the core responsibilities of the GPA. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels. You will work within your capabilities and:

Arrange appointments, tests and follow up appointments for patients

Arrange referrals on behalf of the GP both internally (to other clinicians or care coordinators/social prescribers/health and wellbeing coaches) or externally (to the hospital or community clinics)

Complete simple clinical observations/investigations as directed, such as dipstick urine, taking blood pressure, ECGs, phlebotomy etc.

Support the GP with immunisations and wound care

Help the GP liase with external agencies (such as arranging admissions so the GP can continue with their consultations)

Sorting clinical post and prioritising for the GP

Extracting information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding this to patient notes

Supporting with QOF reviews

Explaining and promoting healthy lifestyle choices

About us

An exciting new opportunity has arisen at Pontefract & Knottingley Primary Care Network (PCN) for three General Practice Assistants (GPA) to join our friendly and dynamic team.

The PCN covers four GP practices in the district serving a patient population of around 48,000 and we are looking to recruit enthusiastic, forward thinking GP Assistants to work as part of a team covering the GP practices and also work alongside Care Co-ordinators in our Care Homes. The role also includes collaboratively working across the network area with our community partners to look after the health and wellbeing of our local population.

Further ongoing support will be provided through both local and countrywide governance and peer support groups. Additional professional development in line with the individuals needs will be available with shadowing, mentoring, e-learning, and relevant courses/conferences.

Conexus Healthcare Limited is the Confederation for general practice in Wakefield, we have four areas of work.
