Job summary
A phlebotomist plays a key part in the smooth running of patient care. Their primary role is to collect blood samples safely, accurately, and with as much comfort as possible for the patient. This includes identifying the correct tests, preparing the equipment, confirming patient details, and ensuring samples are labelled and handled properly so they reach the laboratory in good condition.
Main duties of the job
They also help manage the flow of patients by organising appointments, maintaining infection control standards, and reassuring individuals who may be anxious about having blood taken. In many practices, phlebotomists support the clinical team by spotting issues that may need clinical attention, such as difficulties finding a vein or unexpected symptoms during a procedure.
This role will work across 3 local practices: Rushden Medical Centre, County Surgery and Brook Medical Centre

Job responsibilities
The core
responsibilities of the Phlebotomist are as follows. On occasion, there may be
a requirement to carry out tasks not listed below, that are within the
reasonable scope of the role.

Obtain
patients consent for the collection of a blood sample

Performing
venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols

Maintaining
accurate patient records

Correct
labelling, packaging and storing of samples

Effective
use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies

Ensuring
samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner

Maintaining
an effective liaison with laboratory staff
-
Working
collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for
patient related matters
In addition to the
core responsibilities, the Phlebotomist may be requested to;

Partake in
audit as directed by the audit lead
2.
Participate
in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
3.
Support
and participate in shared learning throughout the organisation
4.
Complete
opening and closing procedures in accordance with the rota
