Job Description
To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care to the practice population with focus in the delivery of evidence-based practice for patients presenting with long-term conditions and acute problems. This includes screening, assessment, treatment and education and taking an active role in supporting the practice to maximise achievement against local and national targets in respect of the GMS contract and Enhanced Services.
Experience
Registered Nurse with up to date NMC Registration and must have worked in a Primary Care setting with knowledge of current policies, protocols and national targets.

To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients, as well as providing nursing assistance to the doctors and other members of the primary healthcare team.
Job Responsibilities
Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs. Such tasks may include:
- Immunisation of children, adults and travellers
- Diabetes/Asthma Management
- Family Planning
- Womens Health
- Cervical Smears
- Travel
- UTIs
- ECGs
- STI Screening
- Venepuncture
- Wound care
- Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician
- Requesting basic pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs
- Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to GPs as appropriate for chronic disease management
- Maintain and control injectable and oral drug stocks in the treatment room and doctors surgeries
- Work with patients in order to support compliance with, and adherence to, prescribed treatments.
- Provide information and advice on prescribed or over-the-counter medication, medication regimes, side-effects and interactions
- Support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that promote healthy lifestyles, and apply principles of self-care.
Non clinical tasks including:
- Maintaining and cleaning equipment used by the nurses
- Maintaining GP and nurses rooms, stocking and rotating items as required
- Undertake housekeeping duties including, general tidiness and cleanliness of nurses and treatment rooms
- At all times there will be a need to maintain accurate records
- Attend and participate in weekly practice meetings
- Attend and participate in a monthly education meeting with other members of the nursing team
- Assist with the organisation and co-ordination of the provision of nursing services for the practice.

Health & safety
The post-holder will implement and lead on a full range of promotion and management of their own and others health and safety and infection control as defined in the practice Health & Safety policy, the practice Health & Safety manual, and the practice Infection Control policy and published procedures. This will include (but will not be limited to):
- Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines
- Awareness of national standards of infection control and cleanliness and regulatory / contractual / professional requirements, and good practice guidelines
- Responsible for the correct and safe management of the specimens process including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage and transport arrangements
- Management and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the practice including provision, ordering, availability and ongoing correct usage by staff
- Responsible for hand hygiene across the practice
- Ownership of infection control and clinically based patient care protocols, and implementation of those protocols across the practice
