Job summary

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic phlebotomist or potential team member to join us and cover a maternity leave with potential for long term employment. This role would be perfect for someone looking to make a foray into General Practice or someone who is already a phlebotomist and is looking for a great working environment. The Family Practice currently has over 17,500 patients making it a busy and rewarding environment whilst being part of a large but close-knit team. We are ideally looking for someone who has experience however we are prepared to train the right person. We are located close to the centre of Bristol, within walking distance from the centre and Whiteladies Road and easily accessible by bus and train. We also have on-site parking.

The successful candidate will be working 2 days a week preferably and the occasional Saturday for which plenty of notice will be given.

Main duties of the job

1) Perform venipuncture on patients

2) Accurately handle, label and process specimens

3) Maintain infection control and cleanliness standards

4) Provide excellent patient care and reassurance to the patients

5) Ensure proper documentation and data entry.

About us

We are a large and friendly team that cares as much about each other as providing great patient experiences. Located in central Bristol we are well placed to get to with buses, trains and we have a car park if you drive. Cyclists - we offer a cycle to work scheme and have a bike shelter at the back of the building.

You'll also be able to work in a unique Grade 2* listed building and sit out in our garden during the summer. On especially hot days we supply the team with ice-creams! This summer we are having a garden party and we also celebrate together at Christmas.

JOB TITLE: FIXED TERM PHLEBOTOMIST/HCA

REPORTS TO: Lead Nurse (Clinically)

Practice Manager (Administratively)

HOURS: Part time

Job summary:

  • Working under the direct supervision of the Lead Nurse and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture to obtain blood samples from patients only as the result of a direct referral from a GP or nurse practitioner.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood sample
  • Collection of sample(s) of blood in accordance with training and procedures
  • Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers
  • Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity
  • Use ICE online lab request system for all samples sent to the lab
  • Checking patient identification against GP/nurse request and confirming with patient whenever possible
  • Use Emis web software to ensure accurate and detailed information about each consultation is stored in the patient records
  • Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion
  • Perform urinalysis, sending samples to the lab as required, ensuring they are correctly labelled and packed.
  • Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff
  • Notifying the GP/nurse of any significant patient issues
  • Liaising with and assisting members of the administrative team
  • Maintain all clinical rooms and areas to high standard of cleanliness and order, adhering to local and national control of infection policies.
