Medical Practice has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and
hardworking Health Care Assistant to join our team.
Main duties of the job
Cardinal
Medical Practice operates across 3 sites, Chesterfield Drive, Deben Road and
Norwich Road. Our Health Care Assistants predominantly operate out of Norwich Road and Chesterfield Drive. This
role is offered on a full or part time basis.
About us
Cardinal Medical Practice is a busy practice located
on the outskirts of Ipswich Town Centre with a practice population of
approximately 30,000 patients. Cardinal was formed from a merger of
Chesterfield Drive, Deben Road and Norwich Road surgeries and as a result, we
are now one of the biggest medical practices in Suffolk.
The practice has a team of 4 GP Partners, Salaried
GP's, GP Registrars, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacists, Paramedics,
Physicians Associate, Practice Nurses, Healthcare Assistants, Care
Co-ordinators and additional healthcare associates. The team is supported by
Management and a large administrative team.
The practice operates using the SystmOne Clinical
programme and AskmyGP and has a history of high QOF achievement.

Job Summary
To assist in patient care and practice related
duties as directed by and under the supervision of a registered healthcare
professional. The HCA will work collaboratively with the general practice team
to meet the needs of the patients, including the housebound, following practice
policy and procedures.
Clinical
Skills
Undertake annual review checks as part of the
management of long-term conditions:
-
Diabetes
-
Hypertension
-
CKD
-
PAD
-
Mental health
-
Learning disability
Process
urine samples and take action in line with practice protocol
Undertake
ECGs including 24 hour ECGs
Undertake
blood pressure checks, including 24 hour BP checks and act on results in
accordance with practice hypertension protocol
Take
bloods and prepare/submit blood forms
Apply
dressings and undertake basic would care
Remove
sutures and staples
Undertake
NHS Health-checks and act on results, i.e. QRisk score in line with practice
protocol
Measure
and record following physiological measurements in routine presentations:

blood
pressure

pulse
-
temperature
-
height
and weight - body mass index
-
smoking
history
-
alcohol
history
Undertake
ear syringing as part of the referral pathway to ENT
Administer
vaccinations/immunisations:

- Experience of customer care or of being a carer.
- Experience of working in a care environment.
Qualifications

- Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
- Demonstrates an understanding of the needs of the patient and the role of the health care assistant.
- Willing to develop clinical skills and competency relevant to the HCA role.
- Understands issues regarding accountability and delegation.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates self awareness, i.e. strengths and weaknesses, personal qualities and skills.
- Able to communicate routine information that requires tact and persuasive skills, or where there may be barriers to understanding.
- Standard keyboard and telephone skills.
- Able to make judgements when circumstances fall outside normal guidelines such as appropriate referral to nurses/GPs etc.
- Planning and Organisational Skills
- Able to organise own time and workload, and cope with occasional last-minute changes.
- Willingness to undergo education and training for both practice and service.
- Willing to work towards professional and performance objectives (appraisal).
- Flexibility and commitment to teamwork.
- Demonstrates ability to value the opinion of others.
- Demonstrates motivation and reliability.
- Fitness to do the job.
- Manual dexterity and manipulation skills.
