Job summary

Halesowen Medical Practice is seeking a Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly nursing team. We are based less than a mile from Halesowen town centre and 8 miles from Birmingham city centre with excellent links to the midlands motorway network. Our location places us on the boundary of Dudley and Worcestershire council boroughs and our patient population includes patients from nearby semi-rural towns of Romsley and Hayley Green. We are the lead practice for Halesowen Primary Care Network with our senior partner as Clinical Director. Our current nursing team consists of three practice nurses, one Nursing Associate and two Healthcare Assistants. The role will be 22 hours per week as follows: Tuesday 8.30am-1pm, Wednesday 3pm-8.30pm, Thursday 9am-3pm Friday 9am-2pm. Additional hours would be considered.

Main duties of the job

Candidates will ideally have experience in a primary care setting, however applications may be considered if the relevant skills can be demonstrated. The role will include, long term condition reviews, wound care management, adult immunisations, NHS Health checks, Ear irrigation and other duties to assist the nursing team. You should be able to demonstrate on your CV the ability to cope in a busy environment. You will need to have completed the NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care. The Care Certificate would also be a desirable additional achievement.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Operational Responsibilities • Carry out new patient health checks and NHS health checks. • Reviewing patients with Long Term Conditions to record routine measurements, offering disease management advice in accordance with the practice’s clinical protocols. • Carry out ECG’s. • BP monitoring • To undertake duties associated with 24 hour blood pressure monitoring to fitting and downloading from patient. • Phlebotomy • Obtaining specimens e.g. urine, and testing as instructed and completing appropriate laboratory forms and contacting patients to follow up results. • Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/Nurses, ensure specimens are labelled and bagged ready for collection with the necessary paperwork completed • Weight monitoring • Routine Preventative Immunisations • Carry out B12 vaccinations • Basic wound care/ulcer care and removal of sutures • Ear irrigation • Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician • Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording • Surgical equipment and vaccine re-stocking and stock rotation • Clearing and re-stocking consulting rooms • To monitor usage of sharps bins, ensuring that rooms are adequately stocked and bins are transferred to storage for collection. • Ensure clinical waste collection runs smoothly, reporting any problems to the Practice Manager • Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations • Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients’ health and well-being • Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual • Assist with childhood and adolescent immunisations maintaining any Child Health and Practice records including completing any necessary claims to the Health Authority. • Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted, provide lifestyle advice to patients making any necessary referrals within the Practice • Ordering and display of health promotional materials. • Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GP’s. • Maintain and clean equipment used by the nurses and GP’s according to the practice infection control policy. • To order supplies as directed by the nursing and management team. • Undertake regular maintenance checks of water temperatures and vaccine fridge temperatures. • To co-ordinate the periodic maintenance checks and calibration of medical equipment in accordance with the practice policy. • Provide lifestyle advice to patients making any necessary referrals • Assist the nurse with child immunisations to include data input when required • Undertake housekeeping duties, including general tidiness and cleanliness of clinical rooms. • Maintain accurate records • Undertake home visits for patients for pre-determined duties covered within the existing remit of the Job Description. • To undertake Extended Hours/Access shifts. • Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well-being • Calling patients forward for appointments and pre- appointment procedures. • Such other administrative or clinical duties that maybe required from time to time by the Partners, Nursing Team and the Managerial Team.
