Job responsibilities
General Nursing Duties
The following procedures will be carried out according to
the agreed Practice Protocols.
1) Phlebotomy.
2) Taking
other pathology specimens.
3) BP
checks, Height, Weight, BMI and Urinalysis.
4) Ear
syringing and examinations; advising patients in good ear care.
5) Wound
Care & dressings, including leg ulcers based on the dressings formulary
and professional guidance.
6) Doppler
Assessments.
7) Removal
of sutures.
8) Immunisations
children and adults.
9) Travel
Vaccinations and advice.
10) Injections,
including Zoladex and Depo Contraceptive.
11) Lifestyle advice.
12) Telephone
Consultations.
13) Chronic Disease Management.
14) Emergency Management.
15) Undertake ECGs as and when necessary.
Anti-Coagulation
Clinics
- Monitor patients on anti-coagulation
therapy in accordance with the requirements of the Locally Enhanced Service and
Practice Protocols, ensuring the systematic call and recall of patients on this
register.
- Initiate and
titrate manually the dosage of Warfarin with support from named GP and Anti-coag
Lead Nurse.
Health Promotion
- Advise patients thereby motivating them
to change their behaviour to reduce health risks, including exercise, and
stress management and referring to local services as required.
- Provide
nutritional advice, including to underweight patients.
Women's Health
- Cervical Cytology.
- Advise patients on
the Cervical & Breast screening programmes.
- Breast
self-awareness and checking advice.
- Basic incontinence
management including referral as appropriate to the Continence Nurses.
- Pessary Changes.
- Family Planning.
- Basic
contraceptive advice on available methods.
- Pill checks for
patients already on an oral contraceptive using Practice Protocols to rule out
risk factors for using this method.
- Adivce on reducing
the risk of sexually transmitted infections.
- Offering Chlamydia
screening to males and females.
Self-test pack for under 25 year olds.
Men's Health
- Give basic advice on testicular cancer, family planning and
sexual health and refer as appropriate.
Mental Health
- Identify patients within routine consultations who may have
un-diagnosed depression and/or symptoms of stress and refer as appropriate.
Child Protection
- Understand basic
legal issues around child abuse including statutory and local Child Protection
Procedures.
- Undertake online
and practical training on Child protection.
- Be vigilant and
report any suspicion of FGM (female genital mutilation)
Other responsibilities
- Equipment / Drugs / Infection Control.
- Check
and re-order all medical supplies as necessary.
- Ensure
safe storage, rotation, and disposal of medical supplies including vaccines.
- Ensure
correct temperature is maintained in vaccine refrigerators and log daily.
- Sterilisation
of reusable equipment via CSSD.
- Support
colleagues on infection control measures.
- Clean
down equipment using suitable wipes/cleansing solutions.
- Ensure all manual and computer records are updated following
treatment and consultation.
- Support clinical audit programmes or aspects of care in
conjunction with the Practice Manager, GP or individually.
- To attend necessary training/study days to enable the
role to be carried out in a safe manner.
- Complete mandatory
online training as advised.
- Develop both
personal and professional skills as per annual appraisal objectives.
- To maintain complete patient confidentiality and to always
act in a highly professional manner within the code of conduct set by the NMC.
