Job summary

We are looking for a Health Care Assistant to join our friendly team to work 16 hours per week, preferably over 3 days. Salary will depend on experience in the range of £10.99 - £11.36 per hour.

Main duties of the job

The ideal applicant should be flexible and able to do overtime as required. Previous experience of a similar role would be preferred although training could be provided for the right candidate. The Health Care Assistants duties include venepuncture (phlebotomy), Blood Pressure management, administering IM injections, recording ECGs, and health promotion. This would be in addition to assisting other health care professionals within the practice, administrative support and keeping computerised medical records updated relevant to your caseload.

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: HEALTHCARE ASSISTANT

LOCATION: The Wellbridge Practice

RESPONSIBLE TO: General Practitioners/Lead Nurse

KEY RELATIONSHIPS: Primary Health Care Team (PHCT)

JOB PURPOSE: To provide a flexible service to patients needing identified procedures and providing clerical and practical support to the nursing team and practice.

HOURS OF WORK: 16hrs per week over 3 mornings, with flexibility to work overtime when needed.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. To obtain blood samples from identified patients as requested by Doctors, or other health care professional.

2. To undertake blood pressure measurement as requested by doctors, or other health care professionals. To record home blood pressure readings. To adhere to the hypertension and hypotension practice policy.

3. To carry out routine and urgent ECG recordings as requested by doctors, or other health care professionals.

4. To assist in the urgent care of acutely unwell patients, and emergency situations, including urgent bloods, ECGs, observations, and if necessary, resuscitation, among other tasks.

5. To assist the Doctor or other health care professional procedures such as minor surgery, and coil insertion.

6. To ensure that blood samples and associated paperwork are correctly completed, labelled, and stored appropriately until collected to go to the laboratory.

7. To use the practice computer medical system to objectively document and record all procedures undertaken, and other relevant patient information.

8. To maintain an adequate supply of venepuncture, ECG and clinical consumables in the treatment and consultation rooms, ordering and controlling stock.

9. To ensure that the treatment room or consulting room (and other clinical rooms if required) is cleaned and tidied as per infection prevention and control guidance and Health & Safety regulations. Maintain stock monitoring and rotation as required within the room.

10. To liaise with the multidisciplinary team including the practice and district nursing teams, doctors, pharmacist and physiotherapist, regarding patient care as appropriate.

11. Summarising of incoming patient records if required.

12. Liaising with patients and arranging appointments as necessary.

13. Filing and photocopying paperwork when appropriate.

14. Taking and recording messages.

15. Making telephone calls as required.

16. Adhere to the practice infection prevention and control guidelines including decontamination, personal protective equipment, and uniform.

17. Carry out patient health education and promotion opportunistically.

18. Participate in the annual flu vaccination programme and annual flu training updates as requested by the Lead Nurse.

19. Administer other medication such as B12 injections after completing the appropriate training, depending on the demands of the nursing service.

20. Daily checks and recordings of fridge temperatures ensuring the cold chain has been maintained. Informing the practice nurse of any discrepancies.

21. Work as part of the nursing and practice team, communicating with, and supporting each other.

22. Carrying out other clinical and administrative tasks as deemed appropriate by the Lead Practice nurse, GP Partner or Practice Manager.
