JOB DESCRIPTION
PRACTICE NURSE
Accountable to: Practice Manager/ General
Practitioners
Job Summary
To provide nursing services to patients of the practice in
participation with General practitioners according to agreed and documented
protocols. These services include treatment, screening and advice within the
professional competence of the post holder. The post holder should additionally
be responsible for the management of the treatment room where applicable.
Principal Responsibilities
Within a nursing framework, the post holder is responsible
for.
Clinical
- To
Assist in the care of practice patients to include treatment, preventative
care, screening and patient education.
- The
implementation and evaluation of the chronic disease management
programmes, which include asthma, diabetes, chronic obstructive airways
disease, coronary heart disease, hypertension, mental health &
epilepsy. This list is not exhaustive and part of the role would be to
consider which other areas of care might be suited to Practice Nurse E. G.
syringe ears and administer injections etc. The nurse will carry
managerial and clinical responsibility for their own caseload and patients
will have direct access to him/her.
- Accessing
and advising and administering appropriately travel injection for patients
travelling abroad.
- Prescribing
medication but all prescriptions to be consulted with and signed by the
General Practitioner.
- Requesting
and interpreting test as appropriate to patient needs.
- To
be responsible for infection control, and advise the Practice on health
and safety related issues.
- To
provide general and specific health screenings to the practice patients
with referral to general practitioner if necessary. Advise patients on
general care and minor ailments.
- Undertake
the collection of pathological specimens including intravenous blood
samples, swabs, ECG etc perform any investigatory procedures requested by
the general practitioner
- To
advise patients opportunistically on general health care and promote a
healthy lifestyle.
Administration
- To
order equipment and supplies as necessary.
- Maintenance
and safety of adequate resuscitation equipment.
- To
maintain accurate patient records, registers and statistics.
- To
participate as a team member within the practice.
- To
participate in the process of clinical audit.
Professional Development
- To
maintain professional development by identifying won training needs and
attending relevant course and study days to meet this need.
- The
practice is committed to supporting the development of all staff. All
employees have a responsibility to participate in regular appraisal with
the General practitioner.
