We have an exciting opportunity to join our dedicated nursing team as a phlebotomist.

The role is busy, varied, rewarding and challenging so we are looking for a keen and enthusiastic individual who has a flexible pro-active approach with the ability to multi-task.

The ideal candidate will have strong communication and people skills and be a team player. You will have the ability to remain calm under pressure and be able to deal with difficult situations with empathy, efficiency and professionalism.

The successful candidate will be required to work flexibly between 8am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday, across both our Kegworth and Gotham sites. Providing cover during busy periods and sickness is essential in this role.

Main duties of the job

Key tasks include obtaining venous blood samples from patients, as required by the medical staff for laboratory investigations in clinic environments and patients own homes. No two days are the same, and we have the opportunity to make a difference to the patients in our care.

About us

Orchard Surgery is a friendly and successful village GP surgery situated in Kegworth, on the borders of Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. We also have a branch site in Gotham.

We have a team of 5 GP Partners, 4 salaried GPs, 3 Practice Nurses and a Management and Administration Team who provide support to them all.

We are a member practice of PartnersHealth which is the GP Federation for Rushcliffe and the employer for all additional roles within the Rushcliffe PCN.

As a practice we are passionate about patient care and enthusiastic about being a training practice, hosting Trainee GPs and Medical and Nursing students.

Job Purpose:

To obtain venous blood samples from patients, as required by the medical staff for laboratory investigations in clinic environments and patients own homes.

Duties and Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

To obtain venous blood samples from patients in a safe and professional manner and to follow agreed protocols and techniques of blood collection to identify each patient. Working alone in the surgery/and patients homes.

To communicate with the patients and carers whilst performing the procedure, explaining the task being performed.

Undertake appropriate training to ensure practice is maintained and updated. Practice and promote approved and up to date methods and techniques relating to blood collection.

Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity to ensure that the specimen containers are consistent with that of the request forms and ensuring specimens are stored appropriately for collection.

Accurate completion of templates within patient records on the clinical system, SystmOne

To address and work with all patients in a professional and supportive manner.

Ensure that blood samples are taken before Transport collection.

To maintain clinical activity records pertaining to the service according to required standards.

Ensure that all Orchard Surgery policies relating to infection control, confidentiality and Health and Safety are observed.

Any other duties as may be responsibly required within the post.

General

To maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for all PHCT staff, patients, carers and co-workers from other agencies. Ensure all statutory regulations (e.g. Infection Control, Health & Safety, COSHH, etc) are implemented and adhered to

To always promote a professional approach by attire and attitude to patients and staff both in and out of the Practice

Participation in an annual individual performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development

Attend and participate in staff and Practice meetings and in-house clinical training sessions

Taking responsibility for own development, learning and performance and demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work

Any other reasonable duties that may be required from time-to-time
