Job summary

PLEASE NOTE APPLICANTS MUST BE ALREADY QUALIFIED IN PHLEBOTOMY TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POST.

We are looking for a motivated and committed Health Care Assistant to join our team on a fixed term 2 year contract. Working up to 10 hours per week. We are a busy, forward thinking general practice looking for someone with a flexible approach, can-do attitude and a strong commitment to the aims and values of primary care to join our friendly, professional team.

Main duties of the job

Duties include but not limited to:

Venopunture/ taking of blood samples

NHS Health Checks

Assisting Minor Ops

Blood pressure recording

Treatment room duties

Experience of General Practice preferred but not essential. NHS pension scheme is also available.

About us

You will be joining a friendly and experienced team of 5 partners and 2 Salaried GPs, 3 Practice Nurses and 1 HCA. We are based in the North of Halifax serving a population of 9000 patients.Our shared aim is to provide comprehensive holistic patient care for our patients.We are a training practice hosting medical students and student nurses.We value our strong working relationships with the wider community healthcare team and work closely with our local practices as part of the North Halifax Primary Care Network.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

HOUSEKEEPING DUTIES

1. Clean and restock Doctors rooms daily, involving clearing away used instruments and replace, restock blood/ sample bottles and clean couches.

2. Ensure that stocks (drugs & consumables) are ordered and placed in Doctors rooms, Doctors bags, treatment rooms, including emergency supplies.

3. Prepare HCA & Doctors clinical areas, in readiness for clinical sessions including instrument preparation, cleaning, checking of expiry dates, replacing and restocking.

4. Asist in ensuring drug refrigerators are checked daily for the correct temperature, and that contents are checked for expiry dates. Ensure adequate supplies are available and that the cold chain is maintained.

5. Ensure that health promotion materials are maintained by restocking and re-ordering

6. Ensure that equipment is fully operational and that any servicing is arranged and recorded.

7. Ensure that infection control standards are adhered to, report to Nursing team if standards are not being met. If appropriate attend local IPC meetings conduct internal Infection Control audits.

CLINICAL DUTIES

1. Carry out health assessments on newly registered patients, e.g. testing urine, blood pressure checks, pulse, heights, weights, peak flow measurements and taking family history.

2. Venepuncture and packaging of blood samples ready for collection by Hospital.

3. Carry out simple dressing changes, under the supervision of a clinician.

4. Removal of sutures and clips.

5. Assist in minor operations, as directed by the Doctor and/or Practice Nurse.

6. Carry out injections under PSD in line with practice protocols.

7. Report all matters pertaining to patients care e.g. changes in conditions/circumstances to a relevant member of the Nursing or Medical Team.

8. Act as a chaperone as and when required by a Doctor or Nurse.

9. Carry out Ear Syringing on patients who have already had the procedure.

10. Carry out Health checks for CVD (NHS Health Checks)

11. Administer Flu vaccinations, Pneumococcal vaccinations and B12 Injections under PSD.

12. Administer Shingles vaccinations.

13. Carry out Home visits to patients as required.

Please note the clinical duties will only be undertaken after adequate training has been given.

ADMINISTRATION

1. Carry out relevant clerical and reception duties as required in relation to nursing services, e.g. answering the telephone, entering data onto the computer system, carry out computer searches and summarise patients medical records.

2. Provide clerical support for the nursing team including recording clinical information, e.g. cervical smear screening, vaccinations and immunisations, entering data onto EMIS or manual systems as

directed.

3. Organise own work schedule within the constraints agreed by the Practice Nurses/Practice Manger/Doctors.
